HaHa, that is precisely the image I've always had in mind concerning the hands! :P
I'm guessing they've stayed with the design to make it easier to animate her manipulating all the different things in the movie. I think the hands could have been scaled down a tad more, though. It looks like she's got more than enough room for handling the weapons, etc.
This looks really good, though I preferred some of the other layout concepts to this final one.
