Video: Blender's Built-in HotKey and MouseAction Reference

Here's a great info resource that's been lurking right under your mouse pointer! It's a built-in HotKey and MouseAction reference, complete with search capability.

The short story is that it's located in the Help menu - "HotKey and MouseAction Reference".

For full details and how to make it even more accessible check out the short video.

What's covered:

  • The HotKey Reference interface

  • Creating custom screen layouts for the reference

Watch the tutorial online
(SWF streaming, Length - 2:11)
Or, Download the 5.92MB ZIP file to view it offline (load the HTML file in your browser).
Or, Download via Torrent.

Dang! Sorry about that. That's what happens when you don't get enough sleep. I'm correcting it now.

Thanks for letting me know.

I really like when the keyboard shortcuts show up in your videos. Although sometimes they show and quickly disapear. Is this a function of Blender or are you using some 3rd party software to show this ?
If it is not a function of Blender maybe it should be a window that shows all keyboard activity. That way it would be usefull to all people that make videos.
Thanks for your videos I have learned some good stuff. It's just the keyboard stuff flies by sometimes.

I second Paul's question. Is this an external tool or some Blender script? Can you make a tutotial about "Making video tutorials"?

Thanks for the feedback!

The keystroke overlays are produced within the video editing tool that I use (Camtasia Studio).

They do fly by sometimes, sorry. Sometimes I try to allow them to stay on-screen longer but, then there's the issue of having multiple keystrokes being displayed simultaneously. I think that would begin to cause even more confusion. And, if I slow the pace of operations down so that the keystrokes have more time in-between them, the length of the tutorial will increase dramatically.

So, I guess the only current solution is to pause the video.

I think that automatically showing all keystrokes that are pressed during the tutorial will cause confusion because it won't tell you what the keystroke does. Having to articulate the meaning of every keystroke would also slow things down considerably and increase the file size as well.

Believe me, I spend time thinking about these types of things and experimenting with them because I want to create the best learning materials that I can.

In fact, I'm giving some very serious thought to totally revamping the presentation format to something that will resolve several issues:

- download size
- keystroke information
- support for more languages
- the pace of the instructions
- additional study materials and resources
- connectivity between related tutorials on BlenderNewbies and other websites

...we'll see.

Thanks for commenting!

Oh, as far as making a tutorial on "how to make a tutorial", I would love to do that but, the tools I use are mostly commercial tools.

I plan to begin experimenting with doing everything (except for the screen-capturing) with Blender. When I feel that I have a good workflow with using Blender, I'll definitely create a tutorial. If the community needs it...a lot of things may change with Blender 2.5. The current concept of a "video tutorial" might become a little obsolete if the planned Blender macros work like I think they will.

I have a question. Can i save my work to a cd or dvd. and if I can how do i do that.

Kernon Dillon said...

To save a file to a CD or DVD you would have to save it to the hard drive as usual and use another utility to burn the disc. You won't be able to do that from within Blender.

That sounds great.... but i'm realy new at this and I don't know how to save anything I do in blender to hard drive. I can just save it in the blender files. If it's not too much to ask could you tell me how to save to my hard drive.
