Video: Cutting a Hole in Your Mesh

Here's a quick video showing how to cut a hole in your mesh in Blender. This technique is useful for creating very clean holes, without the mess that can sometimes result from using booleans.

Here's a render of a quick model I created using the hole-cutting technique covered in the tutorial:

Nice tutorial for the new blenderheads.

have you thought about doing a voice over? you could do it as your doing the tutorial or just go back and narrate what your doing. I personally find this helps clearify things better, and makes the turtorials more interesting.
just a thought, but still great job, it's much appreciated.

very cool tutorial.

this might be a cool one to link to ( and maybe do a video around it ) regarding learning Blenders game engine and how to create some quick interactions, without having to be an expert Blender user.

I think that too! You should also write white subtitles (like on dvds) to help those who have difficulties to follow english speaking...

Thanks again for your help ! ^^

Very nice!
One question: At the begining of your video you subdivided the cube and then repeated it two more times without showing popup win again. Is there command to repeat last action in Blender?
Thanks

@srdjan:
I wish there was a command to repeat the last action! What you saw there was the result of frames being missing due to the frame rate of the screen capture. I simply went faster than the capturing software was setup to record.

@ichabodcole:
Voice-over will be in most of the video tutorials to follow. I'm not very confident with that aspect but, I guess I'll get better as I do more of it.

@dullgarian:
good idea about the subtitling! They will be used in the next video! There's been a big delay because of technical hurdles but, the next tutorial should be completed and posted today.

Great Video! I sure will use this a lot. I am still trying to learn all the buttons.

It seems that this video is no longer available... What a shame I really need this !

Kernon Dillon said...

The video is still available, I just played it to test the resource. Was there a specific error message you received when trying to access it?

Thanks.

Thanks for the great video. I tried to follow the steps, but got stuck when creating the mesh for the cube. In version 2.46, I found a way to divide a face into half or quarters, but not to the resolution shown in the video. How do I create that mesh in 2.46?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks.

What I did was repeat the Subdivide function until I got to that level of subdivisions. It does go by pretty quickly in the video. Sorry for any confusion.

I've been using Blender for a few months now but it seems I had missed out on learning some of the basics; two of which were shown here (snap menu and crease tool). Thank you for such a clear tutorial! Ali

I know this is an old thread, But i was wondering. After i make the whole, And extrude it. How do i set face to the hole so i can't see down the tube??

Kernon Dillon said...

You can do another extrude, then press the S-key to scale followed by numpad-zero to scale down to a zero value. Then press the W-key and select Remove Doubles from the popup menu. Confirm the removal of the overlapping vertices.

You can see an example of this at the beginning of the following timelapse video:

Hope that helps.
