Shape Modeling Exercise #5 - Wrapping an Object with a Lattice-style Mesh

In this exercise, we'll be creating a lattice, or net-like, mesh that we will then wrap around our targeted object.

Watch the video tutorial...

Here's the blend file that matches the starting point of the tutorial (the reference image is packed within the blend file).

Wow , that was great, there's always something(or three) to learn. The end result looks pretty awesome, can't wait for 2.5 training, i don't feel confident on it at all.
thanks a lot, great tutorial video.

WTH Kernon? This is quality education. Why aren't you being linked in BlenderArtists?

Talk to them. They even link the "exclusive" BlenderCookie tutorials.

To not link this in BlenderArtists is a waste.

Thanks!

@greg:
Yeah, there are so many ways to put things together that you can always find something new.

@verb3k:
I absolutely agree! :p (just joking)
I would imagine that it's an internal decision about what goes in their news feed. There's definitely a lot of "hidden" activity in the community, though, especially in the non-English regions.

Great work Kernon! I'll echo the comments above, I learn something new everytime I watch one of your videos.

I love to see how you approach a problem, these are really useful!

BTW any timeline on when your 2.5 training will come out?

Thanks! Concerning the DVD release, it looks like the Blender Foundation is starting to push toward a stable Beta release (that's supposed to be "documentation-ready") in a couple of weeks. I should be able to start documenting many areas that are currently unstable/broken.

If they stay on schedule, I'm hoping to be able to release the DVD by the end of July/very early August. It's really all hinging on what the Blender Foundation does.

Thanks for a wicked tutorial!

I haven't done it yet, but here is my sons:

Cool, thanks for sharing!

got a problem, the shrinkwrap doesnt do whats shown in your video. It basicaly drags single points out of the "wrap" onto the vase, when I switch to "project". Any idea?

Maybe there are some flipped normals in the mesh.

In edit mode, press the A-key until all of the vertices are selected. Then press Ctrl-N to recalculate the normals to point in a consistent direction.

If that doesn't work, please create a post in the Forums with a screenshot showing the problem and the Shrinkwrap modifier settings.

Thanks.

Anyone else get a huge urge watching this to make a 3D version of the spiderman suit? >:3

Awesome tutorial!

Regarding the negative rotation around the Z-axis: Nope, it's not a bug. It is simply that when in Top view, the arrowhead of the Z axis projects "outward" from the screen, as opposed to receding toward the horizon as is the case with the X axis in Front view or the Y axis in Side view. So the rotation is reversed from what you would expect because you are looking down the Z-axis arrow from the opposite side.

Try choosing Shift-7 as your view to demonstrate this. From this view, the rotation will act as expected, because the Z-arrow is pointing away from you instead of toward you.

Blending BriGuy said...

As a slight "edit" to my previous message, I just noticed that Side view acts as Top view does. Only Front view has the axis arrowhead "receding" into the distance. It appears both top and side view point the axis toward the user instead of away. Again, it's not a bug, as positive axis rotation is clockwise in all cases, from the viewpoint of the axis arrowhead pointing away towards the horizon. So the rotation itself is consistent, and our selected viewing angles are "reversed" in two of the cases.

Yeah, that makes sense. It can still throw you off a little bit, though. It's the first time I noticed it happening.

Thanks.

Kernon your tutorials are great!! :D
I have one question, where did you get textures, i saw that you got it many. Can you give me a link?

Kernon Dillon said...

Thanks!

For textures, a few good sites are:
http://www.cgtextures.com/
http://www.openfootage.net/
http://www.textureking.com/

There are a ton of resources available, it really depends on what I need in the moment. If I can't find what I'm looking for at the sites above, I start searching with google.

Yeah, your tut's not bad, but at least write that you'll be using shrink-wrap modifier. It's like tut named Filming a Cartoon, and all you're doing is animating. There are exact names so that people who watch this don't get confused.
Your next tutorial could be about real Lattice modifier to atone for this :)
