Shape Modeling Exercise Series - #4 (Twisted Doorknob)

In this shape modeling exercise we take a look at modeling a Twisted Doorknob.

The point of these videos is not to model a complete object but to rather focus on different shapes and issues that you may encounter while modeling. So, essentially, these are exercises.

Hopefully, these videos will help you better understand how to approach modeling certain shapes, and what tools are available in Blender to make things easier.

Download the blend file, reference image, and texture.

To avoid having to go round and select all the vertices if you get something wrong after using the spin, most recent builds of blender (including the one shown in the video I notice) have spin/screw as a modifier, confusingly both labelled as screw, but if you only want spin you can just set the screw value to zero. I think spin/screw should probably have been a modifier in the first place, but it probably pre-dates the modifier system. Having said that, the spin/screw tool is useful if you only want to spin a few vertices.
For anybody who doesn't know the advantages of a modifier, in this case it essentially keeps your original model and does the modifier(s) to it after you have modelled it. Therefore you can edit (in this case) the modified version just by modifying one small section.

Thanks for the feedback!

I tried the Screw modifier but I couldn't get the desired results.

Kernon,

Thanks for these, they're great. My one problem is that you seem to have a different button layout than the default (I don't have that handy, clean looking panel on the left of your screen), so when you go and click on Spin I have to go digging around to find the right place. I also have no idea where my Duplicate checkbox is, which you seemed to find without any effort!

You might be using an "older" version of 2.5. I regularly download the latest available build for my platform from graphicall.org.

Bug fixes and new features are added every day so I always use the latest builds. Just unzip it to a folder and you're ready to go.

Where can i find more of the textures like the gold one that you included in this download? i tried going to the blogspots listed on the image but they are no longer there.

Anyway thanks for the tutorials, much appreciated

Thanks!

@Bunkielove
I'll do a tutorial about the textures, where to find them, and how to use them in Blender. I meant to do it earlier this week, but I'll get to it this weekend.

Sweet, thanks Kernon!

@Rob
that clean looking checkbox is the tool menu ...u can by default open this with the t-key...depending on wether you are in edit or object mode it will display different options...
if u use spin for instance it will pop up some properties in a l9ower windo in the tools menu...there you'll find duplicate etc.

also u can add your won tools to the menu via the add key in the window.

Great tuorial series !

Now i know what that vertex groups thing is all about, that's really useful, thanks.
i didn't get the jpg materials preview or what is going on there, will have to wait for next tut.
these shape modelling series are an excellent idea by the way, really practical!

Kernon, great tutorial. Keep them coming. Have you considered doing this full time? Just a thought.

Kernon Dillon said...

Yeah, I've been pretty much full-time with it for about a couple of years now. There's just a lot of other things going on as well.

I've decided to pick up the pace a little bit on the tutorials, though. :)

Kernon, what did you do to have the zbrush materials folder, and how come it is working with blender?
i saw the name of the directory when you select the .jpg to add it to the doorknob.
Cheers!

I just took cropped screenshots of the ones I liked in the zbrush download center.
http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/library/

I used a Firefox extension called "kwout". It's a screen capture tool.

There are also collections of these that people have made. You can find some at blenderartists and other cg forums. Just google for "matcaps".

The work by just mapping the texture image to the normals. And, set the material to be shadeless.

Hope that helps.
