Shape Modeling Exercise Series - #2

In this shape modeling exercise we take a look at modeling a fancy doorknob handle.

(Please excuse some issues caused by my sinus allergies. :p )

The point of these videos is not to model a complete object but to rather focus on different shapes and issues that you may encounter while modeling. So, essentially, these are exercises.

Hopefully, these videos will help you better understand how to approach modeling certain shapes, and what tools are available in Blender to make things easier.

Download the blend file, reference image, and texture file.

Great tutorial. You don't just show the HOW, but you explain the WHY as well. Blender is not just about technique, it's also about strategy. Without planning your project ahead of time, you will end up wasting hours or days in rework.

With tuts like these, you are headed for a long successful career as an important Blender resource.

It's a nice tutorial, but it seems from the photograph that the cross section of the handle is more circular than what you have. Your cross section is more rectangular. If you think about how the handle would connect to a circular base, the handle has more of a cylindrical shape to it than a square shape. Just my 2 cents. Thanks though for the tut! :P

You can get some at the Zbrush download center:
http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/library/

But, you can't use the download file because it's in a Zbrush format, so you can do a screengrab. I use a Firefox extension called "kwout".

Also, there are plenty of matcaps that have already been "captured" and collections can be found in several forums and such. Google for "zbrush matcaps".

This is very helpful for us beginners! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a couple of questions. I would like to have a real image displayed as a reference, either as you had in the upper right corner, or, preferably right on the object/edit grid as a background. I don't know how to do this, nor do I know how you got that image window in the upper right corner. What I have there is the list of blender objects, etc. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!
